What problem are they working on?

Food Animal Welfare

  • Over 56 billion farmed animals and 1 trillion fish are killed every year by humans.
  • Farmed animals often experience extreme confinement, painful tail and beak mutilations, inhumane handling, transport, and brutal slaughter.

What do they do?

The Good Food Institute (GFI) is working to transform the animal agriculture industry by promoting the development of competitive alternatives to animal-based meat, dairy, and eggs. Does it work?

A scientific evaluation of GFI’s work is remarkably difficult since their approach does not lend itself to an experimental study. Nevertheless, in other projects and in the two years since GFI’s launch the team has shown that they have an impact-driven approach and achieved several early successes that can plausibly be attributed to their work.

What do you get for your dollar?

There are no rigorous cost-effectiveness analyses of GFI’s work that we are aware of. Still, we believe that developing alternatives to animal products is a very promising and neglected approach to ending factory farming.

How much money could they use?

Animal Charity Evaluators estimates GFI can commit to a maximum of between $1.5 million–$4.4 million in the 2018 – 2019 budget year.

We recommend GFI because of its:
